A post after 3+ years... All thanks to stints away from home, lonely evenings in a hotel room & most importantly

1 evening at my cousin's place in Delhi... This post and the ones to follow are dedicated to my 2 lovely nieces for inspiring this topic & my Akka for urging me to restart my blog...

A story that has been intriguing me for quite sometime... and of late maddening me with the host of Logo Quizzes floating around on the Android Market oops!!... Google Play, like most people I've been driven to the point of madness by those logos that seem so familiar yet so maddeningly out of reach!!!

One of the most recognizable logos in the world,

The Nike Swoosh,

is the symbol of the athletic shoe and clothing manufacturer Nike Inc,an American multinational corporation that is engaged in the design, development and worldwide marketing and selling of footwear, apparel, equipment, accessories and services.

The Nike "Swoosh" was created in 1971 by Carolyn Davidson, while she was a graphic design student at Portland State University.

In June 1972, the first running shoes bearing the Swoosh were introduced at the U.S. Track and Field Olympic Trials in Eugene, Oregon. Until 1995, the official corporate logo for Nike featured the name Nike in Futura Bold, all-cap font, cradled within the Swoosh. In 1995, Nike began using the stand-alone Swoosh as its corporate logo, and continues to use it that way today.

Did you know:

  • Carolyn Davidson charged Phil Knight (Phil Hampson Knight is the co-founder & chairman of Nike Inc.) $ 35 for her design,
  • In September 1983, Knight gave Davidson a golden Swoosh ring with an embedded diamond, and an envelope filled with an undisclosed amount of Nike stock to express his gratitude.
  • "I don't love it," Knight told her, "but I think it will grow on me." - Phil Knight to Carolyn Davidson after their final decision on the Swoosh
